The National
Historical Section has been a separate section of the Šariš Museum since
1951, when Dr. Ján Koma arrived. Štefan Apáthy has the merit for its
further development in 1953 - 56.
A number of specialists in the field have worked in the National
Historical Section. From 1968 it was Zora Rusnáková, Ph.D., author or the
scenario of the national historical display, which was opened to the
public in May 1970. Dr. Zora Liptáková and Dr. Viera Danielová worked
there for some time as well, and so did Martin Mešša, Ph.D. who spent
there more than 16 years. In 1963, Andrej Kovaľ started to work there as a
specialist during the construction of the Museum of Folk Architecture,
which was opened to the public during his time there. The designers of the
construction were: Imrich Puškár, Arch. Eng., MSA, and graduated historian
Blanka Puškárová.
The selection of buildings for the Museum of Folk Architecture started in
1972.
Since 1972, research and documentation of traditional architecture in
the Šariš area has been conducted. It includes photographic and plan
documentation, and the situations in settlements.
The section is located in Bardejovské Kúpele. It manages two displays:
the national historical one and the Museum of Folk Architecture. The
Rákoczi Villa, built in the Classicist style, houses, besides a display,
also the whole National Historical Department with its technical support.
The section focuses on the presentation of collections through displays
and exhibits. Its scientific research focuses on the complete
documentation of ethnography in Upper Šariš. Its public relations
activities include methodological work.
The Section has 6,665 collection items in its records. The Category I
collections include 76 items. The richest fund is the textile one,
containing about 2000 collections.
